As we approach the Fathers’ Day weekend, let’s take note of a valiant stand that Matt Birk, retired Ravens center has taken for life. Some people succumb to public pressure; some give in to peer pressure; some compromise their principle for fame and fortune; while others will sell their morals for 30 silver pieces.

And then there are those that will stand for righteousness no matter the cost.

And so it is for Matt Birk.

This past Thursday Mr. Birk explained during an interview on Minnesota’s KFAN radio why he declined an invitation to the White House.

As reported by Marc Weinreich of Sports Illustrated, Birk said,”

“I wasn’t there. I would say this, I would say that I have great respect for the office of the Presidency but about five or six weeks ago, our president made a comment in a speech and he said, ‘God bless Planned Parenthood.”

Planned Parenthood performs about 330,000 abortions a year. I am Catholic, I am active in the Pro-Life movement and I just felt like I couldn’t deal with that. I couldn’t endorse that in any way..I’m very confused by [the President’s] statement. For God to bless a place where they’re ending 330,000 lives a year” I just chose not to attend.”

I commend Mr. Birk for his courage to stand up for his principles. The world needs more Birks who stand for godly values and principles.

I believe that men and women of conscience should take note of Mr. Birk’s position and join him in public expression of why we should stand for life. Again, since Fathers’ Day is just around the corner, perhaps you would like to share his testimony with the fathers you know, and also recommend Kevin Burke’s book, REDEEMING A FATHER’S HEART.
